A clutch kit is a drivetrain set made up of the pressure plate, friction disc and release bearing that connects and disconnects engine power to the gearbox, and wears during gear changes.

When you press the pedal, the release bearing pushes the pressure plate, the plate releases the friction disc from the flywheel and engine power is cut from the gearbox. As the pedal is released, the disc grips the flywheel and transmits power again. Wear occurs mainly during pull-away and half-clutch moments — the short periods when the disc turns at a different speed from the flywheel.
Replacement symptoms
The clearest sign of a slipping clutch is engine revs rising without matching acceleration; it is more obvious on hill starts and under load. Pedal vibration, judder on pull-away, difficulty selecting gears and a metallic noise when the pedal is pressed also point to the kit. A burnt smell signals heavy slipping.
Flywheel and related parts
Because the gearbox has to come out, the pressure plate, disc and bearing are always replaced together; doing them separately doubles the labour. On cars with a dual-mass flywheel, the flywheel’s free play must be measured and the flywheel renewed if it is out of tolerance, otherwise the new kit will judder before long. On hydraulically operated systems the master and slave cylinders should also be checked for leaks.

How many kilometres does a clutch last?
In mostly out-of-town use it can exceed 150,000 km; in heavy city traffic and with poor pedal habits it can drop below 60,000 km. Driving style matters more than mileage.
Can just the friction disc be replaced?
Technically possible but not correct. The pressure plate and bearing are the same age; if they fail soon after, the gearbox has to come out again.
Can a dual-mass flywheel be converted to single-mass?
Conversion kits exist for some cars and lower the cost, but vibration and noise increase; with the manufacturer’s damping removed, the load on the gearbox changes.
