What does this part do?

The timing belt/kit synchronises the crankshaft and camshaft to ensure correct valve timing. As a broken belt can cause severe engine damage, it should be replaced at the mileage or time interval specified by the manufacturer. When replacing it, it is recommended to also renew the tensioner and idler pulleys and, on most engines, the water pump.
